Why would a medicine be made to order?

When this comes up

A health professional suggests a compounded version. You want to know what changes, why it is proposed, and who prepares it.

Ask for the exact change and the reason it matters for your care. Then find out which pharmacy or facility prepares the medicine.

A need and an approval are different things

FDA means Food and Drug Administration. The agency describes compounding as a way to meet a health need left unmet by an approved product, such as a dye allergy.

As of September 26, 2026, FDA approval does not apply to medicines prepared to order. Before sale, the agency has not checked their quality, effectiveness, or safety.

As of September 26, 2026, federal law bars pharmacies from routinely making copies of ready-made medicines or producing those copies in large amounts. The rule includes medicines that are almost the same as a ready-made drug.

A change made for a particular patient can be allowed under this copy rule. The prescriber must judge that this change makes a significant difference for the individual patient. Paying less, by itself, is not that kind of difference.

A permit does not mean every medicine is allowed

As of October 6, 2026, Arizona has different medicine-making rules for pharmacies filling patient prescriptions and registered drug-making businesses working under a separate federal system.

As of October 6, 2026, a state permit alone does not show that the ingredients and the way the medicine is made are allowed under state and federal law.

  • What health need does the ready-made approved medicine fail to meet?
  • What exact change is being made?
  • Which pharmacy or facility prepares it?
  • Are you using the rules for a pharmacy or for a medicine-making facility?
  • Why are this medicine and its ingredients allowed for me under both Arizona and federal law?
  • Can you explain the rule in plain words and put the answer in writing?
